British officers in the Russian navy

by William Tooke, FRS

An interesting article from the Gentleman's Magazine of October 1822.

Just as many officers followed Cochrane's fortune in South America, after the American War, many young officers (or would be officer) with no prospect of promotion or employment entered the Swedish (Sidney Smith being the most famous) or the Russian services. Some were killed during the Russo-Swedish war in the Baltic, some climbed to flag rank, some returned home at the start of the Great War.
