Hello

New to this forum but am going to be bold and kick off with what is hopefully a simple question, but one that I have not been able to track down a specific answer to. Any help much appreciated.

I am currently reading the orginal journal of Captain John Simcoe of HMS Pembroke en-route, as part of Admiral Boscawen's fleet, to Halifax, Nova Scotia in February 1758, prior to the landing at Louisbourg in June of that year. Simcoe's Master at this time was a young James Cook.

There is a regular entry in Simcoe's journal, and Cook's log and journal, to "the Admiral made the Signal for all Lieutenants". Lieutenant is in the shortened form.

I wonder might anyone know what specifically this signal meant or would initiate? I might possibly be reading the entries incorrectly and what I interpret as Lieutenant may be something else.

As a sobering aside, The Pembroke was launched in 1757 and Cook joined in late October of that year. A 2 month cruise in the Bay of Biscay preceded the 10 week voyage to Hailfax! During this period well over 30 crew members "departed this life", only two from accidents, one falling over board and one "....occasioned by a fall from off the Fore Topsail Yard at 10 at night...). On arrival at Halifax over 100 men were taken ashore to hospital.

Many thanks

Chris

(My apologies that this is pre Nelson but hope that is ok)

Welcome aboard.

It's a signal made by the admiral for the lieutenants of the fleet to come and meet on his flagship. With no radios or mobiles all orders were to be given "viva voce" or by letters.

There was also a signal for all captains and also for other officers like pursers or bosuns.

Hope this help.
