Founded in 1972, Conway was a leading publishers of books concerned with naval and maritime history, in the hands of Robert Gardiner and Julian Mannering as editors.
In time, Conway was sold by its then proprietors, and Gardiner and Mannering transferred to the new owners.
After other changes, they set up the imprint Chatham Publishing under the umbrella of Gerald Duckworth & Co.
In the earlier 2000s, Duckworth experienced problems that resulted in its liquidation, but Chatham was rescued by maritime publisher Lionel Leventhal, which retained Gardiner and Mannering.
In the mid 2000s, Leventhal decided to dispose of multiple interests, including the Chatham imprint, which was discontinued.
With the help of Pen & Sword Publishing, the book publishing arm of the Barnsley Chronicle newspaper group, Robert Gardiner and Julian Mannering set up the Seaforth Publishing imprint, and during the past five years have produced many important high-quality volumes on important maritime history subjects.
Conway is now an imprint of Avona Books with a very short catalog mainly reprints of it's glorious past.
