What is known of the vessel St. Jago which was taken by HMS Phaeton in 1793, what made the ship so valuable?
Thank you,

The squadron under Admiral Gell captured a French privateer, the DUMOURIER, and her prize, the ST JAGO, a Spanish Register ship with silver from Lima, worth one million pounds according to report. _________________ Ionia |

Any information available on any prize money given to the squadron for taking the St. Jago?

I believe that the lieutenants each received 1400 pounds (this seems to be correct). You can calculate the number of lieutenants, masters and Captains of Marines in the squadron (from their rates) and from this you will be able to work out the total of the distributions in this class which will amount to one eighth of the total.
On the other hand, it appears that Lord Hood received 50,000 pounds as Commander in Chief. It might be easier to work from this figure if it can be confirmed.
One report quotes 935,000 pounds as the total. Whether this included the DUMOURIER I do not know. _________________ Ionia |
