No author or source are quoted so I can't give credit to whom it belongs.

Here is a study that seems very promizing:
BLUE JACKETS AND WHITE TROUSERS: BRITISH AND AMERICAN SAILOR CLOTHING, 1750-1815 by Matthew P. Brenckle, Program in Maritime Studies, East Carolina University, 2004.
http://www.ecu.edu/maritime/brenc1.htm

Any idea how to fetch a copy?

The thesis of Matthew P. Brenckle makes fascinating reading (at least for people interested in social history).
It will probably be published in the form of a book.

A chapter is devoted to the clothing from prints, paintings and other literary sources, but the most interesting stuff is coming from the archaeological finds from the British shipwreck General Carleton of Whitby in Poland:
http://www.abc.se/~pa/mar/wrak32.htm

The excavation has given an important collection of pieces of clothing, probably the most important, late 18th century, common clothing collection in existence.
This collection is now at the Polish Maritime Museum http://www.abc.se/~pa/mar/musmorsk.htm.
The museum will soon publish the archaeological report under the title "The General Carleton Shipwreck, 1785".
