Whilst our hero was doing rounds of the starboard jetty he was approached by four Irish Navvies, who were working on the jetty.
One of them says ‘How long you been in the Navy then mate?’
Puffing up his chest with pride, the sun glinting off his toe caps,
our hero replies’Over 20 odd years, why do you want to know’
The Navvy replies ‘ Well you’ll be knowing what a SPURLASH is then!’
‘Actually’, our hero shuffled his feet. ‘I’m not sure that I do’
The Navvy replies,’Well I’ll tell you then, it’s the noise an anchor makes when it hits the water, SPURLASH.’
The Navvies then fall about with laughter.
This is a true story, that happened in Portsmouth dockyard not so long ago. |
