And why not the other navies of the period?

In researching John Shepherd, Royal Marines I have discovered that he served as a 2nd Lt from 1797-1803 then was commissioned as a First Lt in the Royal Marine Artillery in Sept 1804.

After being severely wounded in the head in action at sea in July 1805 he was made Adjutant in the RMA, first in the Portsmouth Division in Oct 1805 then as Staff Quartermaster in 1806. In 1807 he moved to Plymouth Division. He was commissioned Captain in 1812 and served in 146 Coy in Woolwich Division. He died in 1815.

I assume the severity of his wound meant that he would not have served at sea again and was given a desk job - what what exactly would an Adjutant/Quartermaster's duties have entailed?

He was married in 1806 and had four children. Were there married quarters for RM officers at this period? If not, would he and his family have rented a house locally?

Hope someone can enlighten me!
Anne

Maybe the Royal Marines Museum http://www.royalmarinesmuseum.co.uk/newweb/ at Southsea can give you some help.

They have a lot of archives.

Here are 2 pdf files taken from that websites that may be useful :

Many thanks for the links. I have actually seen this before but a while ago and had forgotten about it. I hadn't spent much time on it. Will now look at it in greater detail.
