I'm hoping someone can help me find an answer to this question of these 2 types of sailing warships which could stay at sea the longest, a ship of the line or a frigate?
Could a cruiser of World War II or even today be considered a frigate?
Thank you,

James

In theory all sailing ships could stay at sea forever : wind is for free and aplenty.

The limit was the water and the food for the crew.
The fleets were replenished by transports from England and food and water from what frienfly land was near.

Frigates had two types of missions : harrass the enemy shipping and as HN said be the eyes of the fleet.

I have no idea of what was the mission of a WWII cruiser.
