STRAFFORD (50) 4th rate Built in 1735, Chatham DY.
Used as breakwater in 1756.

  • 1739 Capt. Thomas TREVOR, with the squadron that sailed under Adm. VERNON from Spithead in July for the West Indies. Contrary winds forced him to bring to in Portland Road until 1 August when a favourable gale enabled him to proceed.
  • Ad. Vernon's instructions to the captains of his squadron.
  • That upon coming up with any Spanish ships or vessels, either by signal or chasing from the admiral, or otherwise, they will use their utmost endeavours to take, sink, burn, or otherwise destroy them. And for better encouragement of the officers and seamen to do their duty, the admiral orders the captains to assure them that his Britannic majesty would have a regard to rewarding their services in the distribution of the prizes to be taken from the Spaniards; and as there might be speedy occasion for the squadron entering upon service, the captains are ordered to daily exercise their men both to great guns and small arms, so as to give them all the experience they could, for enabling them successfully to put his majesty's orders into execution, and for that purpose they are directed to give the strictest orders to their respective watches to be careful in making sail in due time, to keep the whole squadron together, and not hazard the losing company by their negligence.
