  • 1758 Cdr. Joseph FRAINE, promoted from lieutenant. SPEEDWELL was with Commodore Richard HOWE's squadron in the expedition to land about 14,000 troops, under the command of the Duke of Marlborough, on the French coast near St. Malo on 5th. June. The force was landed with little opposition and did some damage, but was re-embarked on the 11th. and 12th., after it was considered impracticable to attack St. Malo. FRAINE was sent home with Marlborough's dispatches.
  • 1776, renamed the SPITFIRE fireship.
