SAPPHIRE (36) 4th rate Built in 1651, Ratcliffe.
Run ashore in 1671.

  • 1671 Capt. John PEARCE, cruising in Channel. On 31 March whilst off the Isles of Scilly, he sighted four sail which, for no good reason he decided were Algerine corsairs. Aided by his lieutenant, Andrew LOGAN, and in spite of objections from the master and the ship's company, he ran SAPPHIRE ashore to save her from capture, where she became a wreck. The approaching ships proved to be friendly and the two officers responsible were tried by court martial on the following 17 September. For such contemptible cowardice they were both sentenced to be shot.
