RYE (24) 6th rate Built in 1740, Rotherhithe.
Wrecked in 1744.

  • 1740 Launched on 1 April by Mr Bird, the first of the 20-gun ships ordered to be built and "reckon'd as fine a moulded ship as ever was seen".
  • 1740 Capt. Franklin LUSHINGTON, Lisbon.
  • 1744 Capt. Ormond THOMSON, promoted out of the FLY sloop on 26th. July. On the 29th. November in the North Sea Capt. THOMSON was chased by a large ship flying French colours and, in his endeavours to escape, ran ashore on the Norfolk coast and was lost. A subsequent court martial determined that the chasing ship was English and Capt. THOMSON was honourably acquitted of blame.
