  • 1743 Capt. Thomas BERTIE, appointed on 14th. March. He was immediately ordered to cruise in the English Channel, where on the 20th. of the following month, he had the good fortune to capture, after an action of an hour's duration, a French sloop of twenty-four carriage guns, called the VICTOR bound from Morlaix to Cadiz. Early in 1745 he was appointed to the WINCHESTER (50). 1744 On 4th. February advice reached London from Plymouth, brought by the PHOENIX, that a French squadron had sailed from Brest on 26th. January, consisting of 21 sail under three flags and were seen that evening steering north. Sir John NORRIS set out for Portsmouth to take command of the fleet at Spithead.
