  • 1757 Capt. William HOTHAM, North Sea. On the 28th. March 1759 MELAMPE, in company with the SOUTHAMPTON (32), Capt. GILCRIST, came up with the large French frigate DANAE (40), with 330 men. The MELAMPE, which was considerably ahead of her consort, brought the enemy to a close action in which more than twenty men were killed and as many wounded in DANAE, before SOUTHAMPTON could get up. The combined efforts of the two ships soon forced DANAE to surrender with 30 or 40 killed. MELAMPE lost 8 men killed and 20 wounded. In SOUTHAMPTON Capt. GILCRIST was shot through the shoulder with a pound ball and was put ashore, dangerously wounded, at Yarmouth. She had one man killed and 7 others wounded.
