  • 1718 Capt. George PROTHEROE, appointed on 4th. June. He was promoted by Sir George BYNG. It is believed that he was a lieutenant on the BARFLEUR, on which that admiral hoisted his flag on being appointed commander in chief in the Mediterranean.
  • In June 1719 Capt. PROTHEROE fought an action with a large Spanish privateer between the islands of Capria and Corsica. The action started on the evening of the 28th., but being interrupted by the approaching night, was resumed at at four o'clock the following morning, and continued until eight, when the Spanish captain having been wounded, and so many of the crew killed or disabled, she was compelled to strike. LOOE had only two men killed during the action.
