GIBRALTAR (20) 6th rate Built in 1754, Portsmouth DY.
Broken up in 1773.

  • 1754 Capt. Richard SPRY, before the end of the year he sailed to America with Commodore KEPPEL, returning the following March with news of safe arrival of the convoy. He was promoted into the FOUGEUX.
  • 1756 Capt. Archibald CLEVELAND, promoted to post captain on 5 November. He removed to the SHANNON in July 1757.
  • 1757 Capt. William HOTHAM, 10th. August. 1757 Capt. William Mc CLEVERTY, promoted out of the PEGGY sloop on 1 November, served in the Mediterranean under Adm. BORCAWEN. One of the lookouts posted to watch for the French squadron under M. de la Clue, he was fortunate in sighting the enemy. He ran in towards Gibraltar, close enough for his signals to be seen, then stood back to keep the French in sight. This enabled the admiral to come out and attack them the following day. He was promoted into the NORWICH.
  • 1759 Capt. Walter GRIFFITH, promoted from being a lieutenant in the ROYAL GEORGE on 11 December. Mediterranean until the end of the war, then returned to England and continued in command until 1766.
  • 1770 Capt. Robert BOND, he died on 15th. March 1772 soon after quitting command.
