ASSURANCE (70) Built in 1696, Toulon as L'ASSURE.
Captured in 1702.
Broken up in April 1712.

  • Captured during the action at Vigo Bay on 12 October 1702. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy as ASSURANCE by Capt. John MITCHELL on 16 October.
  • 1704 Robert HANCOCK. With the Anglo-Dutch fleet under Sir George Rooke at the battle of Malaga on 13 August. ASSURANCE had 6 killed and 14 wounded.
  • 1709 Capt. Anthony TOLLET. On 25 February he sailed from Cork in company with SUNDERLAND (60), HAMPSHIRE and ANGLESEA, both of 50 guns, with a convoy for England. On the morning of 2 March he saw four sail standing after him and about 7 o'clock they came within random shot, whereupon he made signals for the merchantmen to bear away and his own ships to form line. About 8 the enemy bore down in line and hoisted French colours. The French commodore, in a 70 gun ship, fell aboard ASSURANCE, first on one side and then the other engaging her yard-arm and yard-arm, keeping up a steady fire of small shot which cut down most of the marines and seamen on deck. ASSURANCE forced the enemy to sheer off using her upper deck and part of her lower deck guns but the three other enemy ships fired several broadsides into her before following their commodore towards the merchantmen. the British ships repaired their damage as quickly as possible but the French refused further action and took five merchantmen, two of which foundered. Some of the convoy were brought into Plymouth, others bore away for Falmouth. Capt. TOLLET, who had been ill for four months, had too be carried onto the deck from his cabin. Both he and the first lieutenant were wounded.
  • ASSURANCE had 25 killed and 53 wounded, some mortally; HAMPSHIRE had only 2 killed and 11 wounded; ASSISTANCE had 8 killed and 21 wounded, among the latter was Capt. TUDOR who died of his wounds. The French ships, led by Du Guay Trouin had an abundance of men killed and wounded.
