  • 1772 Capt. John ELLIOT, sailed from from Spithead on 22 April, having on board Lord Carlisle, Mr Eden and Capt. George Johnson, who with the commanders in chief of the land and sea forces in North America, were appointed to negotiate with Congress.

    Lieut. George RUTHERFORD, while commanding TRIDENT at Butcher's Island, near Bombay, in March 1801, had three seamen, NICHOLAS, SMITH and DAUSE, flogged to death in "circumstances of peculiar horror" without the previous sentence of a court martial. He was arrested and charged with murder, but escaped from the SALVADOR DEL MUNDO in Plymouth on 12 March 1806 by jumping overboard. A reward of 200 pounds was offered for his apprehension.
  • 1802 Vice Ad. RAINIER in VICTORIOUS arrived in Madras Roads on 22 May accompanied by INTREPID, SYBILLE, LEOPARD, TRIDENT, EURYDICE and ALBATROSS.
