    On 24 January TOURTERELLE put to sea when gunfire was heard.
    Other ships were about to follow when it was learned that the vessel involved was the BRILLIANT.
    Capt. BARRIE told Col. Campbell of the Craignish Volunteers that seven of his crew had deserted in boats from the islands as he passed through the Sounds and that he had fired to warn other boats to keep clear.
