    In January 1814 volunteer seamen from THISTLE, then lying at Halifax, joined those from FANTOME and MANLEY in marching 1,000 miles from St. John's, New Brunswick, to Kingston on Lake Ontario to man two frigates being built there to counter American moves towards Canada.
    On the third evening after leaving Frederickston the master of THISTLE died from the intense cold.
    The journey from Halifax to Montreal took from 22 January to 1 March with a further 11 days to Kingston.
