SULPHUR Bomb Purchased in 1797.
Sold in 1816.

  • 1803 Donald M'CLEOD was appointed to SULPHER at the renewal of hostilities in May 1803.
On 12 September she joined TERROR and the frigate CEREBUS, with Sir James SAUMAREZ embarked, in the Guernsey Roads and they sailed the following morning with CHARWELL and CARTERET in company to bombard enemy shipping and shore installations at Granville.
SULPHUR's bad sailing prevented her beating up and she arrived several hours after the others, to find that TERROR had already carried out an exchange of fire with with shore batteries and enemy gunvessels and thrown a number of mortar shells into the town.
The following morning the two bombs maintained a steady fire for over five hours until the falling tide compelled them to retire.
One hundred and fifty-one shells were fired by SULPHUR in four and a quarter hours, seven of which struck the barracks.
During this time 22 gunvessels drawn up in a line joined with the batteries in returning the fire without doing much damage.
  • As she got under sail CERBERUS grounded and remained on a sand bank for over three hours.
The nine gunboats which closed her were driven off by the the two bombs, CHARWELL and CARTERET and also by KITE and ELING which had also come up.
SULPHUR arrived in Portsmouth with the news on the 17th. She carried as a passenger Capt. DUMARESQ of CHARWELL with Sir James SAUMAREZ's dispatches.
  • On 20 September SULPHUR convoyed transports with the 31st., 40th. and 91st. regiments to Guernsey and Jersey.
  • 1805 Woolwich.
  • 1807 Shingle ballast vessel at Woolwich.
