RANGER (14) A 162 ton excise cutter covering Cape Cornwall to Portland.
  • On 25 June 1800 her commander, M. A. FRAZER, brought a fine smuggling cutter into Plymouth with 800 ankers of spirits on board. She had been captured off the Dodman.
    He brought another 140 ankers of spirits on 16 October.
    On 31 May 1801 RANGER came into Plymouth with a large seizure of spirits from a raft and also a smuggler with 200 ankers of spirits.
  • On 15 January 1803 she rode out the worst gale that many seamen could remember before seeking shelter in Plymouth the following day.
  • 1803 and the early part of 1804 was spent in cruising, mainly after smugglers.
    On 9 August 1804 she brought into Plymouth a convoy from the Downs.
    The LIBERT lugger captured off Guernsey on 17 August by RANGER proved to have been formerly the VALIANT, a government hired lugger.
    Her cargo was unloaded at Plymouth on the 20th. and she had on board 730 ankers of spirits, besides wine, soap and tobacco, worth altogether nearly 4,000 pounds.
