LION (14) Hired armed cutter No details.
  • 1799 Lieut. TATHUM, Downs.
His boat's crew rescued Mr Donat O'BRIEN, midshipman, and the few men serving under him, from certain death as the block ship laden with granite foundered while he was taking it across the North Sea. She was one of 13 similar ships which were intended to block the entrance to Goree harbour where three Dutch line-of-battle ships were sheltering. All 13 were lost in a gale.
  • LION was driven on shore and bilged at Jersey on 11 November 1800 in the same storm which wrecked HAVICK and PELICAN.
