  • 1805 Lieut. Thomas SHIRLEY, Downs.
    While sailing guard off Ambleteuse with WATCHFUL on 24 April 1805 they were ordered by Rear-Ad. DOUGLAS to chase to the north-east were they discovered a number of Dutch schuyt trying to round Cap Gris Nez.
    They closed with the enemy and with round and grape shot threw them into confusion.
    Unfortunately GALLANT received four shots between wind and water from the heavy batteries ashore which were within a musket-shot and had to haul to on the opposite tack to stop the leaks. She had no casualties.
    One of the schuyts struck to WATCHFUL and the inshore squadron pursued the rest.

    On 2 January 1811 he captured a Danish privateer RESTORATEUR off the coast of Norway. She was armed with six 12-pounders and had a crew of 19 men.
