- She was commissioned at Plymouth by Josiah OAKE on 1 December 1841 and he took her to West Africa on anti slavery patrol.
In spite of being consistently out-sailed by the vessels she was trying to catch, she took the slavers AVENTURA on 28 September 1844, UNCAS on 21 April 1845 and CONCEICAO FELIZ on 6 May. - FERRET was re-commissioned by George SPRIGG at Sheerness in February 1846 and returned to Africa. She paid off at Devonport on 4 August 1848.
(She served one more commission off the African coast in the 50's, then served as a training ship and a tender before being wrecked in Dover harbour during a gale on Easter Sunday, 28 March 1869)
