When DE COURCY's request for their release was rejected and one of the passengers was murdered, he entered the harbour and although CHARYBDIS was only armed with one long gun and two carronades he engaged the Columbian force of one corvette, a brig and three armed schooners. He forced the corvette to strike after killing 25 men and sank the brig. The schooners then surrendered.
DE COURCY was promoted to commander from 12 February.
