AURORA (32) 5th rate Built in 1766, Chatham DY.
Burnt in 1770.

  • In 1768, in consequence of complaints of misconduct by servants of the East India Company, the directors sent three surveyors, Henry Vansittart, Luke Scrafton and John Ford, with authority to investigate and redress grievances. They sailed in AURORA and reached the Cape of Good Hope safely but were not heard of again. The general conjecture was that the vessel must have been burnt at sea. Searches were made by Sir John Lyndsay in every place where they might have been shipwrecked. AURORA's purser was William FALCONER, the author of the Marine DictionaryÓ.
