ARTOIS (40) 5th rate Taken from the French by Capt. Roddam HOME in RODNEY off the coast of Portugal on 1 July 1780.
Sold in 1786.

  • 1780 Capt. M'BRIDE, who removed to her from BIENFAISANT at the end of the year. She was employed watching the Dutch squadron then ready for sea in the Texel and was present at the battle between the Dutch under Rear Ad. Zoutman and Vice Ad. PARKER's squadron off the Dogger Bank on 5 August.
  • On 3 December ARTOIS captured the Dutch privateers HERCULES and MARS, each mounting twenty-four 9-pounders and 10 cohorns. The Dutch lost 22 killed and 35 wounded out of 310 men, while ARTOIS had only one man killed and six wounded.
  • 1782 Capt. J. MACBRIDE, Plymouth for Channel Service.
    ARTOIS was with Ad. BARRINGTON's squadron which intercepted a French convoy bound for the East Indies in the Bay of Biscay during April 1782. FOUDROYANT took the PEGASE (74) on the 21st. and QUEEN captured ACTIONNAIRE, armed en flute, on the 24th. Ten transports fell into British hands.
  • She spent the rest of the war off the Irish coast.
