ALERT (10) Cutter Built in 1777, Dover.
Taken in 1778.

  • 1777 Lieut. John BAZELY, the ALERT cutter of 10 guns, 10 swivels, and 60 men, at half past seven in the morning of September 22nd, brought to action an American brig privateer; the action continued until ten, when the American, taking advantage of the disabled state of the cutter, made sail. By the activity of Lieut. BAZELY the cutter was soon in a condition to pursue the enemy, and renewed the action at half past one. At two she struck and proved to be the LEXINGTON of 16 guns, 12 swivels and 84 men; seven of whom were killed and three wounded.
  • 1778 Capt. John FAIRFAX (see ARETHUSA). ALERT came up with a French schooner of 14 guns and compelled her to strike with the loss of five men killed and seven wounded.
