ADDER (12) Gun-brig Built in 1806, Topsham.

  • 1806 Lieut. Molyneux SHULDHAM, Channel. She was captured when she went aground on the French coast on 9 December 1806.
  • On 27 May 1814 Lieut. SHULDHAM was tried by court martial on his return from captivity.
    While lying to she had drifted and, owing to an error in her reckoning she had drifted over a ridge of rocks during the night and could not get out. The lieutenant, placing himself at the fore top-mast head, had steered her through rocks and breakers into a small cove where the people had been saved.
    He was admonished for not heaving the lead while lying to.
