  • 1797 John HAMILTON, master, North Sea.
    When Vice Ad. de Winter sailed from the Texel on the morning of 7 October 1797 he was immediately seen by ACTIVE which was close in shore.
    Mr HAMILTON informed CIRCE as the Dutch frigates came up and chased CIRCE, ACTIVE and the SPECULATOR lugger until they sighted Capt. TROLLOPE's squadron.
    ACTIVE was detached and on the 9th. appeared off Yarmouth with a signal flying for the enemy at sea and Ad. DUNCAN immediately sailed for the Texel with 16 sail of the line and 3 frigates and, at the battle of Camperdown, forced the surrender of the Dutch Admiral.
