The Sailor's Word-Book
by Admiral W. H. Smyth.

This dictionary was posthumously edited and revised by Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Belcher in 1867.

William Henry Smyth, born on 21 January 1788, in Westminster, London, was the only son of Joseph Brewer Palmer Smyth and his wife, Georgina Caroline, granddaughter of the Rev Dr Pilkington.

After an honourable career during the Napoleonic wars, he illustrated himself as a surveyor and hydrographer.

In 1821, he became a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and of the Royal Astronomical Society. On 15 June 1826 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society and in 1830 was one of the Founders of the Royal Geographical Society of London.

He became an Admiral (retired lis) on 14 November 1863, and died on 9 September 1865 at St John's Lodge, Stone near Aylesbury, Buckingham.

As often, Google scanning was far from perfect and I scanned some pages anew.
